Will an Albany, OR Lender Want Equipment, Receivables or a Personal Guarantee as Collateral?

· 3 min read

In short

Mintreach Finance, an Albany, Oregon small-business funding service, explains collateral for Linn County, OR business loans: what counts as collateral, what makes good collateral, how a secured line of credit works, what stands in for collateral on unsecured loans, what a personal guarantee means, and an invented example of how much collateral a request needs.

What Is Considered Collateral for a Business Loan, From Excavators to Unpaid Invoices?

  • Equipment and vehicles, including the machine being financed
  • Accounts receivable: invoices customers owe
  • Inventory held for sale
  • Real estate the business or owner holds
  • Cash or deposit accounts
  • A blanket lien on all business assets, recorded through a UCC filing

Equipment financing is secured by the machine it buys, which is why it is the featured option on this site: construction had 432 employer establishments and manufacturing 162 in Linn County, OR in 2023 (Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023), and both run on machines. See equipment financing.

What Makes Good Collateral for a Business Loan: Value, Resale and Control

Good collateral holds its value, has a ready resale market, and can be identified and reached by the partner. A late-model excavator with a serial number and a title is strong; custom fixtures bolted into a leased building are weak. Receivables from established customers are stronger than receivables from customers who pay late. Perishable stock counts for little.

How Does a Secured Business Line of Credit Work Against Receivables and Stock?

A secured line sets its limit against collateral, such as receivables and inventory, and the amount available rises and falls with them. The partner may ask for regular reports of receivables and stock. As customers pay, the line is paid down and becomes available again. The line of credit page covers limits, draws and renewals.

Unsecured Business Loans From Direct Lenders: What Stands in for Collateral

An unsecured loan has no specific asset pledged, but it is not unconditional. The partner leans on cash flow, credit history and may ask for a personal guarantee, and may still record a general lien. Unsecured terms are a partner's decision; none is assured, and the request may be offered on secured terms instead.

Personal Guarantees on a Linn County, OR Business Loan: What Signing One Means

A personal guarantee makes the owner personally responsible for the debt if the business cannot pay. It can reach the owner's personal assets. Some guarantees are limited to an amount or a period; others are unlimited. Read the guarantee as closely as the loan, and ask your attorney about it. A term loan for a purchase may carry both collateral and a guarantee.

What Collateral Is Needed for a Linn County, OR Business Loan: An Invented Example

Invented example: a business asks for an invented $160,000. A partner values its invented $140,000 of equipment at an invented 70% and its invented $60,000 of receivables at an invented 80%, giving invented collateral coverage of $146,000 (our arithmetic). The invented shortfall of $14,000 would need a down payment, a guarantee or a smaller request. Partners set their own percentages; these figures are invented to show the arithmetic.

Collateral on an Equipment Lease

In a lease, the lessor owns the equipment during the term, so the equipment secures the lease without a separate pledge. A lessor may still ask for a security deposit, advance payments or a personal guarantee. At the end of a finance lease, ownership passes to the business; at the end of a fair-market-value lease, the lessor takes the equipment back unless the business buys it.

Blanket Liens and Second Positions: When Assets Are Already Pledged

A business that already has a loan with a blanket lien has pledged all its assets to that lender. A new partner then stands second in line, behind the first lender, which weakens the new collateral. Some new partners ask the first lender to release specific equipment; others decline. Check your existing UCC filings before a request, so neither side is surprised.

Merchant Cash Advance Agreements and Collateral Language

A merchant cash advance is not a loan, but its agreement can include a security interest in receivables and a personal guarantee of performance. That can affect later borrowing, because the provider's filing may sit against the same receivables a new partner would want. Read the security and guarantee sections of any advance agreement; the merchant cash advance page explains the structure.

Releasing Collateral When a Loan Is Paid Off

When a secured loan is paid, the lender releases its lien and, for a titled vehicle or machine, signs off on the title. Ask for the release in writing and check that any UCC filing is terminated, because a stale filing can confuse the next partner that searches the records.

Checklist Before Answering a Partner's Collateral Questions

  • A list of equipment with serial numbers, titles and any existing liens
  • A receivables aging report
  • An inventory report by category
  • Any real estate and its mortgages
  • Existing UCC filings against the business

The six options compared page shows which funding types are secured by what, and the request form starts the conversation.
